Review: Understanding Ang Manananggal sa Unit 23B #PPP2017

It was a real manananaggal contrary to my expectation that they will sweep the viewer with scenes using lights and sounds to deviate the details of the Filipino mythical creature we heed to see. I've joined fellow bloggers watching the premiere of Idea First's entry to FDCP's 2017 Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino "Ang Manananggal sa Unit23B" last night at UP Film Center. Starring Ryza Cenon and Martin Del Rosario written by Jen Chuansu and directed by Prime Cruz, the movie was, like its mythical creature transforming into what its purpose seemed to intend, monstrous, devouring yet half-mast its evolution. Jewel (played by Ryza Cenon) sneaks to satisfy her hunger and pain choosing victims to devour and hides the crime scene using the common placards used in EJK "Wag tularan, pusher ako". The strategy to hide the crime taking today's alibi for killing was like what our society's habit of narrating the reality to many when the image is graphic and unacceptable, a mythical winged monster to appease the innocent just like how we have all been indifferent to why we have created this being in our culture and history, fictitious and hard to imagine. Ang Manananggal sa Unit 23B succeeded in satisfying the millenials' hunger for better CGI of the creature yet inadequate to connect the dots just like its loopholes in characters' back stories. We all gripped at the detail of the creature although we have lost some scenes that romanticizes the love story that it developed. We all wanted a Nico(Martin) who'd choose to adapt to our hideous souls and Vangie Labalan as the grandmother of Nico (Martin Del Rosario) was unforgettable and her nails. From QC Cinema Festival, Ang Manananggal sa Unit23B made us all continue to imagine if the story will evolve sexless and subjective like its varied layers of issues and problems. It is definitely a must-watch for the youth intetested in anthropology and Philippine culture and the rest of the innocent majority heeding entertainment and diversion from today' crass of politics and newsfeeds. Hats off to Blackburst for that elaborate detail of the creature in one scene. It was the most beautiful Manananggal I have ever seen in my life. Don't miss Ang Manananggal sa Unit23B, one of the films included in FDCP's Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino showing Aug16 to 22 in cinemas nationwide.
