Review: A different "Tondo" in @starcinema's #HariNgTondo is now showing

It was a different kind of "Tondo". I've expected guns and blood in Reyna Films', Central Digital Lab and Star Cinema's Cinemalaya's Special Jury Prize "Hari Ng Tondo" but it gave me the essence of what the place was known for - strength and attitude. Starring Best Actor Robert Arevalo, Best Supporting Actress Cris Villonco, Liza Lorena, Rez Cortez, Aiza Seguerra, Lorenz Martinez, Ciarra Sotto and Rafa Siguion-Reyna with a star-studded support cast, "Hari Ng Tondo" was also at the Toronto International Film Festival last month. The special screening Tuesday last night at SM City North ESA The Block was participated by Star Magic talents, Julian Estrada, Alex Diaz, Alex Castro, Ynigo Pascual and other celebrities (Danica Sotto, Pauleen Luna) including the producer/writer Bibeth Orteza. The story of once was "Hari Ng Tondo" grandfather went back to rekindle the power and wisdom he once felt to get his grandchildren to face their realities with confidence. My jaws dropped at the character of Lorenz Martinez (Emil) and Ciara Sotto who looked so pretty towards the end of the film. I was astounded at how Aiza Seguerra's character played an important role in somehow creating continuity and fluid transition of scenes for the film with her music and antics. "Hari Ng Tondo" will teach what best Filipino movies are known for - heart and compassion. It was more than the "pagpag"left-over food in the carinderia of Tondo and more than the slums and dirt that most of us fear of the place. The realizations through circumstances of the characters will get you to reflect on how much we've all forgotten what's behind the blatant violence and poverty. "Hari Ng Tondo" teaches the King in all of us to get and give a heart. The happy and daring ending will get you back to how it all started. Don't miss "Hari Ng Tondo" now showing at selected cinemas nationwide.
