Event: Stop avoiding the sun otherwise reduce the risk of getting chronic diseases with #Forti-D @unilab_ph
3 out of 5 Filipinos suffer from Vit-D deficiency. Many of us do not know that Vitamin D isn't actually a vitamin. We were told all the time that we get Vitamin D only when we drink milk. What they failed to tell us then was the fact that Vitamin D is not actually an essential dietary vitamin and it can be synthesized in adequate amounts of sunlight exposure. Of all vitamins introduced to us, we knew little about Vitamin D and this is probably one of the reasons why the report on Vitamin D deficiency is alarming increasingly in the country. The sad truth on 3 out of 5 Pinoys suffering Vitamin D deficiency was based on the study last year presented during the 36th Annual Convention of the Philippine College of Occupational Medicine with the theme "Moving Forward to Healthy Workplaces" by Dr. Marilou Renales.
All these facts were presented to the media last Friday during the launch of Forti-D, the newest food supplement of Unilab Philippines at Bar One, Holiday Inn Hotel Mandaluyong. I was also surprised knowing that best exposure to the sun to activate Vitamin D in the body is from 10am to 3pm. We were told all the time before 10am and it gave me ideas now how important it is to keep a daily routine to walk under the sun on my way to work. The lifestyle of many Pinoys these days is worse and it's a daily circumstance. Getting out before sunrise and putting more sunscreen because most of us want to bleach our bodies to be whiter actually make us all prone to Vitamin D deficiency.
During the media launch, many of the media participants became interested asking what age is appropriate to give Colecalciferol (Vitamin D) to kids since we would rather have them all indoors to avoid heat stroke. We should have been happier having a natural tan complexion producing the right amount of Melanin but our lifestyle avoiding sun daily blocks the sun's rays responsible to activate Vitamin D in the body.
Why do we need Vitamin D anyway? Colecalciferol (Vitamin D3) actually affects our bone structure, blood pressure, hormone production and potential for diseases and cancers. Studies have shown how this Vitamin D deficiency is correlated to the increase number of chronic diseases. The doctors told us that if we keep the lifestyle we adopt in our lives, we should at least take Vitamin D supplements like Forti-D. Taking one capsule of Forti-D everyday helps reduce the risk of getting chronic diseases by unlocking the proper function of organs typically affected by such illnesses according to Mr. Alex Panlilio, Unilab VP for consumer health.
Forti-D may just be what we need to get our organs working and further avoid the chronic diseases increasing rapidly everyday in the Philippines. I was happy to hear that Forti-D's SRP is Php6.50 in leading drugstores nationwide. I've been recommended since 2008 after bone surgery and metal implant of my left ankle and I've kept taking Vitamin D for years. Forti-D is a better alternative with the right amount of 800IU compared to the former brand I'm taking. I'll feel better now knowing I've chosen Forti-D with the recommeded IU (800) everyday and it's dirt cheap too at Php6.50/capsule.
