The icons of the Philippine music industry on stage was a hair-raising experience. I was fortunate to have attended the grand launch of SM Mall of Asia Arena, biggest and capable to house at least more than 20,000 viewers last night watching Icons Concert. Who would want to miss the performances of ABS-CBN's Philharmonic Orchestra with Ryan Cayabyab, Lea Salonga, Dulce, Rachel Alejandro, Vernie Varga, Piolo Pascual, Jed Madela, Christian Bautista, Erik Santos, Jose Mari Chan, Freddie Aguilar, Basil Valdez, The Company, Martin Nievera, Arnel Pineda, Juris, Pokwang, Wally and Jose, Richard Poon, Bamboo, G-Force and the powerful couple, Ogie Alcasid and Regine Velasquez?
Hosted by Pops Fernandez and Jim Paredes, the event featured outstanding performances of Philippines' icons in creative graphic display of lyrics that let the viewers sing-along and enjoy the memorable OPM songs celebrating our Filipino music and entertainment culture. Although Zsa Zsa Padilla and Gary Valenciano (who's out in the US for projects), a special song originally composed by the singer-actor-songwriter Gary V was dedicated to the Chairman of SM Group of Companies, Henry Sy who watched the AVP presentation. Asia's richest businessman's son, Hans Sy Jr. gave a short speech to honor "Tatang" Henry Sy for putting up the SM Mall of Asia Arena. I screamed and shouted at every chance I get when my favorite OPM singers belted songs to their hearts' content like Dulce and Rachel Alejandro who sang together with the sultry Vernie Varga singing the Philippines' Divas Medley.
Remarkable memorable performances also were those done by Arnel Pineda and Lea Salonga and the handsome and famous balladeer icons like Richard Poon, Piolo Pascual, Jed Madela and Erik Santos. I felt in love all over again when the powerful couple Ogie Alcasid and Regine Velasquez sang my favorite duet song, "Hanggang Ngayon". I was unaware being shown on the projector laughing so loud at Pokwang impersonating Mommy D and Wally impersonating Gary V and Jose as Martin. It was just too hard to contain my loud laughter and I didn't mind being seated a few rows away from musical director Gerard Salonga with other VIP guests.
The whole Arena was filled with much anticipation on who's going to perform next because the line-up of powerful voices of the Philippine music industry on stage was just unbelievable. I really hope that they can produce this kind of concert again. It was so breath-taking anyone who watched it is left speechless with so much awe at our Icons. I will never forget this day I've witnessed all the Icons on stage. The iconic performances will leave you with such great pride as Filipino this day forward. Please have them all at SM Mall of Asia Arena again. Thank you ABS-CBN and SM!
