We need a leader who leads by example.
June 30,2010, a few minutes before noon, President Benigno Simeon Cojuangco Aquino III delivered a heartwarming and hilarious speech as the 15th President of the Republic of the Philippines at the Quirino Grandstand, Manila attended by foreign dignitaries, honorable members of Congress, Senate, previous presidents (Ramos and Estrada) and selected media. Before heading to the inaugural speech, en route to the said traditional venue started by previous presidents, his convoy and presidential car stopped at a red light.
The cynics have assumed these were all part of the whole drama. His speech was hauled by screams at "walang wangwang, walang counterflow, walang tong." Some of negative comments included why the program was star-studded by celebrities and variety show of songs and why they'd have to serve Japanese food for the lunch served at Malacanan Palace after the event. I say let the skeptics speculate but please make the Filipino believe in the Filipino.
I fully concur that it was short, simple and straight noting that the President Noynoy Aquino made nine revisions of the said speech according to Manuel L. Quezon III, the presidential spokesman. The spokesman said Aquino would like to deliver his speech from up to 10 minutes only, just like former President Ramon Magsaysay.
It made me cry and laugh at the same time touched at every heartfelt Filipino expressions quite unexpected of a President delivering it in simple conversational Filipino to push every Pinoy to realize he heeds every one's contribution to make his dreams for the country a reality. I was moved and cried at the speech, laughed at the expressions and the funny reactions, uncanny characters and scenes behind the stage. They may all remind the new president of the Hacienda Luisita Massacre case and the influence of fellow "azucareras" in the country. They may all say they'd stay to be vigilant. They may all keep yapping on what is best the President should do to make this a better country.
I will fervently commit to change and contribute to push the Pinoy to stop talking and start acting. The Filipino needs the push and the confidence that the country will not just improve - it must simply change. The change should start from the leader and he showed leading by example before delivering the said inaugural address. The Filipino should start looking within not continue being indifferent with simple corruption practiced in daily lives. The Filipino should start making little sacrifices to change. A simple change "sukli" by taxi drivers in the streets can be one BIG difference. A simple concern to the youth frolicking in streets in midnight may help shape their better future. A simple 'thank you' at simple gestures can move mountains of grudges can help every individual boost morale and potentials. I will continue to teach students to read and write efficiently without any fees and hidden agenda. I will commit to change by writing to lead the skeptics. I will prevail because I would like the Filipino to not step aside and observe - I will move forward by doing simple and random acts of kindness because I love my country. I love the Filipino.
I will follow my leader, my President, propagate the need to change and do my simple acts of change. After all, it is an inevitable truth that IF YOU WANT YOUR FUTURE TO CHANGE, CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDE.
I will follow the example and be an example.
